The Matahina Dam is the North Island's largest earth dam which was commissioned in 1967 and puts out around 290 gW of power behind its 86 metre high walls. It was strengthened after the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake and again a decade later.

There is an active scheme to ensure that trout and eel can find their way up the ladders to keep the fishing in the upper areas of the river sustainable.

The best way to explore this large lake with its unique ignimbrite walls and a surrounding 25kms of the Rangitaiki River is on a trip on Kiwi Jet Tours. The trip is fun, exciting and lasts about an hour and a half through primitive canyons and white water, peaceful surrounds of dairy farming and tranquil forestry settings, giving you a trip you won't forget.
