Mountain biking
The 35km Moerangi Trail was the first mountain bike trail created by the Department of Conservation and winds through the Whirinaki Forest. New Zealand by Bike has this to say about it:
"This magnificent newly developed single track cycle trail opened toward the end of 2009.
Moerangi Track winds through Whirinaki Forest for nearly 35km. Although not technically difficult the Moerangi Track in Whirinaki Forest edges its way along some pretty hairy bluff edges and there is a few fair grunty climbs that might see many riders walking their bikes.
Okahau Road to Skips Hut
From the car park, the track climbs 100 metres towards the first saddle for about 1km. From the saddle, the trail undulates down towards the Whangatawhia Stream for 6kms passing numerous bridges along the way to Skips Hut.
Leaving Skips hut, the trail continues along the Whangatawhia Stream before another 150 metre climb. From the saddle, there is a fast 2.5 kms downhill to Rogers Hut at the confluence of the Moerangi and Wafiroa Streams
From Rogers Hut, the track heads west (right) up the Moerangi Stream. This undulating climb has some steep and exposed sections so inexperienced cyclists should take extra care.
Moerangi Hut to River Road
After leaving the Moerangi Hut, you're in for a big climb. The track continues its way up Moerangi Stream before a steep and sustained climb of 300 metres to the saddle. The descent (as it often is) is fast and fantastic as it follows the ridge down to the Whirinaki River. Watch your speed as the sides here have significant drop-offs."
