Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Waimangu is one of the most fascinating of the thermal wonderlands that are so prevalent in our region. It is the name of a rift valley hydrothermal system that was created after the massive eruption of Mt Tarawera in June 1886. It encompassed Lake Rotomahana, which once was the site of the famed eighth wonder of the world, the Pink and White Terraces. (Which have recently been rediscovered under water).
The beauty of this particular attraction is that it caters for all ages - there is the Lake Rotomahana boat cruise, which is a 45 minute trip showcasing the lake which exploded to 20 times its original size during the eruption, through to four hour eco-walks around this amazing thermal icon.
